An Arcanic fox girl saved from slavery by Maika. Innocent and optimistic, she is frightened by the Monstrum––but trusts Maika and will bravely defend her and others by rushing into battles too dangerous for a child.
Kippa is a young Arcanic girl and a main character of Monstress. Introduced as a slave in Zamora, she was saved by Maika Halfwolf at the start of the series and has since been a constant companion to Maika and the nekomancer cat, Ren Mormorian.
Her arcanic gift is true sight, allowing her to see the true nature of other beings, not just beyond disguises, but to who they truly are. This gift appears to be more than mere arcanic talent, however.
Personality[]
Kippa is a naive and optimistic girl. She has proven to be a true friend––never willing to abandon her companions, regardless of danger. She stubbornly holds fast to her ideals.
Kippa's most notable trait is her courage and loyalty. Even in the face of fear, she wont hesitate to pick up arms and defend those she cares about. She has clear eyes unfaded by the realities of war, in light of the death and suffering she's experienced.
While initially terrified of Maika, calling her "Miss Monster", Kippa begins to trust and believe in the Halfwolf, seeing past her hard exterior as someone who is just as frightened as she is. She also begins to fear the monstrum Zinn less, noting that it seems sad. Since her adventure in the Isle of Bone, Kippa is becoming more unfazed by danger.
Kippa is forgiving of betrayal. Despite being betrayed by Ren twice, she still loves him as her family and has no ill-will towards the mysterious cat.
Kippa is also a promising mechanic, inheriting her mother's interest in tinkering with machinery. Her mother taught her anyone can learn the language of machines, one just has to listen.
Appearance[]
Kippa is a Sweetthorn fox Arcanic. She has brown skin and large amber eyes. Her hair and fur are a rustic red colour that fades into white. She has black fox ears and a long, fine tail that she hugs when frightened or nervous.
Background[]
Kippa was born in a northern refugee camp. When she was still an infant, she was anointed by a hooded Ancient who forbade her parents from telling anyone. She doesn't remember living in the northern refugee camp, but recalls living happily with her mother, who worked as a mechanic.
At an unspecified time, Kippa's mother was murdered by humans and Kippa herself was taken as a slave to be sold at an auction.
Biography[]
Volume 1[]
Kippa first appears as one of many enslaved Arcanics being bid for at a slave auction. At the behest of Sophia, a Cumaea researcher, Kippa is donated to the Cumaea for experimentation. She is taken to the Cumaea Compound in Zamora along with Maika Halfwolf and a handful of other Arcanics.
Once at the Cumaea Compound, Kippa is fitted with a lilium-imbued collar and placed in a cell.
When Maika Halfwolf breaks the collars on all the imprisoned Arcanics, Kippa feels a deep debt of gratitude to her and remains by her side, assisting in the daring escape from the Compound.
Volume 3[]
Kippa is kidnapped by unnamed strangers during Pontus' fall.
Volume 4[]
In a flashback, baby Kippa is visited and anointed by an unknown Ancient.
In the present day, her kidnappers are identified as Dia and Yafaela, oni servants of the Lord Doctor. Kippa manages to escape into the Tomb of Baru where she meets Lady Dracul, with whom she strikes an unlikely friendship with. She barters for Yafaela's and her release from the tomb, appealing to the dracul's peaceful nature.
Kippa then finds a wounded Corvin and distracts Blood Court soldiers from his trail. She is pursued by them but saved by Ren. Once returned to Maika's group, she insists they pursue peace for all races, having grown to understand how tentative the Known World's position in the cosmos truly is.
Kippa's true sight is further developed. Reunited with Maika by Vihn, Kippa sees Maika's inner self as well as Vihn's, recognizing Vihn as a star-faring race like the old gods and the dracul.
Volume 5[]
Kippa travels to Ravenna with Maika and Corvin, seeking out the fox refugees with whom she made a commitment to serve as their scout.
